![]() Congratulations to our California native Jessica Lau, DMD 17, on being selected as January’s Member of the Month!! As 2016’s first Member of the Month, Jessica has set some pretty high standards. She has been involved with ASDA since her first year at BU. In our interview she told us, “I was drawn to ASDA because it lets me see the bigger picture of what dentistry is outside of school. There are so many different ways to get involved, and it really helps to de-stress from class and clinic.” Jessica really took advantage of the different ways to get involved by becoming a part of several different committees. As a first year, she was a committee member of the Health and Wellness Committee and in her second year she was a committee member for the Lunch and Learn. Although being part of both committees, Jessica had never really found her niche within the Chapter until this year as Newsletters Vice Chair. The Newsletter Committee has always interested her but she confidently made the choice to switch committees after discussing the option with our first delegate. Jessica loves the Newsletter because “it's an opportunity for us dental students to express our opinions about anything we're passionate about, whether it's related to dentistry or not. It's so much fun reading people's articles, and it's also a great way to stay up to date on what's going with ASDA as well!” One of Jessica’s most memorable ASDA moments was when she was involved in yet another committee’s event. This past year Jessica decided to be a model in the fashion show portion of our 2nd Annual Multicultural Night, put on by our Diversity and Inclusion Committee. While she gracefully modeled CA beach wear she recalled that, “I got such a bad case of stage fright that I almost ran my way down the catwalk...I don't know how the professionals do it!" When Jessica is not editing the next addition of the BU ASDA Newsletter or strutting her stuff down a runway, she enjoys browsing through Sephora's online store. She usually ends up trying to convince herself not to buy anything, but don’t we all have our guilty pleasures! When we asked Jessica about what was on her bucket list, she told us something that she would need to step away from the comfort of Sephora’s catalog to accomplish. She has always wanted to take an underwater photo in the Caribbean with schools of fish surrounding her. She remarks, “I'd love to take a picture like that one day. But first I'd have to get over my fear of open water...”. Well Jessica, we really hope you do! Jessica we are very impressed with your hard work, and don’t know what we would do without you! We look forward to your continued hard work on the Newsletter! Thank you again for all you do for ASDA! Continue being awesome!

Community Outreach: A DMD2 Perspective As a member of the Community Outreach Committee, AAWD and the HSDA I’ve been able to reaffirm one of the main reasons why I chose Dentistry as a career choice.
Last semester, for the first time, ASDA's Community Outreach Committee organized a winter clothing drive. With the help of the BU family, a simple idea became a success and as a result we were able to help the homeless and undeserved in Boston have a warmer winter. Personally, events like this encourage me to stay involved and positively help others. As Maya Angelou said, we should try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.
Caroline thank you again for all your hard work! We look forward to seeing what else you have in store for the E&P committee!
