Congratulations to Joanna Song, DMD 2017, and Lucy Dang, DMD 2017, our combined June and July Members of the Month! Both Lucy and Joanna are 4th year dental students who are involved in the ADEA Committee of our chapter. We are so grateful of all the work they have done to make our Dental Education Committee so successful! We interviewed Jo and Lucy to getting a little more insight on their experience with ASDA and to find out more about them!
Here are their answers to our interview questions:
Where are you from? Joanna: Calgary, Alberta, Canada Lucy: Garland, TX which is a suburb of Dallas.
What made you interested in joining the ADEA division of our ASDA chapter? Joanna: I spent my first year completely engrossed in studying- and I realized going into my second year I wanted more out of my education. Turns out, organizing events to improve our dental education experience is my passion! It's extremely gratifying to witness how the committee's ideas can positively impact other students and their dental school experience. Lucy: I really enjoy helping others and I enjoy teaching. I think it helps when students can hear from a student's perspective and give tips from their own experience to help others understand better.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Joanna: Baking, binge watching reality TV shows (my guilty pleasure), exploring new foods in Boston, hanging out with friends, and catching up on some zzz's. Lucy: Playing sports and traveling.
What is on your bucket list? Joanna: I want to climb the Eiffel Tower, eat sushi in Japan, volunteer for a dental mission trip, and open my own dental office in my hometown. Lucy: I mostly travel within the US, so I'd like to visit more international countries when I get more time to!
What is your most memorable ASDA moment? Joanna: My favorite ASDA moment was the All About Your Armamentarium event. It was the first time we held this student-led info session introducing the famous red roll-up- and the positive response from the DMD1s was amazingly rewarding! Lucy: My favorite ASDA moment was when I attend Annual Conference as a 2nd year. I really enjoyed meeting so many students from different dental schools, networking, and seeing how organized dentistry can come together to work towards common goals to better our profession. It was very inspiring, fun, and educational.
Any last thoughts or comments? Joanna: A huge thank you to all the ASDA Dental Education committee members- we look forward to another great year ahead! Lucy: Make the best of your time here at BU GSDM! The 4 years will fly by, and you'll only get what you put into it. So get involved, meet new people, and explore your horizons on what all BU has to offer, whether it's academics, research, conferences, or international externships. =)
